Panning for Gold Guide

Panning for gold is probably one of the very best ways in which to make money on Morada. Panning uses and trains the Earth Science skill and can only be done in the North Central Jungle, which makes it an activity which is highly unadvisable for those of you who are new to the island and can't handle the much stronger perps which call the North Central Jungle home. Also a high swimming skill is highly suggested, as the panning location is beyond a stream which you must swim across, and it can be a challenge to deal with the stream's currents.

If you are new to island, you can still go panning, though it is highly suggested that you get an experienced tourist to help you get out to the Jungle who can handle the perps on the way. Having the Humanities ability FOCUS RADIANCE can also prove helpful in keeping the Rogue Stalkers at bay if a low swimming skill means that you have to try several times to successfully cross the stream.

Panning can be done in more then one location in the North Central Jungle, however the most popular location is the Fishing Hole, which is a safe place to pan (and fish) where the perps don't go.

In order to pan, you will need to buy a plastic pan and a small magnet, both of which are available for sale at Ravnu's Trading Post, which is through the Dense Overgrowth of the North Central Jungle. Ravnu's Trading Post is also the place you will be going to sell your panned gold, assuming that is you don't want to carry it all the way back to town, at which point you could also sell it to Mel the Jeweler at Sapphire Seas Jewelry Store on Ocean View Road in Downtown Cape Marassas. Ravnu also sells a panning guide, though it really becomes unnecessary once you get the hang of it.

The panning process is as follows:

Fill my pan
Shake my pan
Shake my pan
Tilt my pan
Shake my pan
Tilt my pan
Shake my pan
Rub magnet on my pan
Put magnet in my <container>
Take gold from my pan
Put gold in my <container>

Now, there is always the chance that you will find fool's gold, which is based upon how many ounces of gold you find in each pan. As your skill in Earth Science increases, the number of ounces you can get without it being fool's gold also increases. Many people just throw any fool's gold that they do find away in the trash can in Ravnu's shack, however, if you wish to make some money for your trouble, you can take it back to town with you and put it in a recycling bin, which will also help your Earth Science skill. Although, being weighted down with gold in any form, whether real or fool's gold, can make crossing the stream more difficult, due to higher encumbrance. Also, please be advised that should you find a pouch of gold in excess of 20 ounces, that is guaranteed to be fool's gold regardless of Earth Science skill.

As your Earth Science skill increases, you will also start to find super-fine gold, which is worth more than normal gold. Personally, Zac is at about 235 hours of Earth Science skill at the time of writing this guide and has thus far found roughly 5 or 6 pouches of super-fine gold. The frequency in which you find it will increase with skill.

It is also highly suggested that you SWIM between each shake of your pan to train your swimming skill and thus make it easier to cross that stream. A few other skill training suggestions would be to hum after each shake of your pan to train your Singing skill and to appraise something, for example your panning magnet, to work your Economics skill, which is useful for raising the amount of money that Ravnu and Mel will pay for your gold, and when purchasing or selling to other merchants all over the island.
