Skills Guide

Below I've listed all the skills available to you in Modus Operandi and the some of the easiest ways of training each of them.

Note on ESP and Humanities:
There seems to a lot of confusion on this subject. For those of you who train in the Paranormal Arts (ESP), it would be a wise decision for you to also train in the Humanities skill, as training in both will net you some of the Humanities abilities, in addition to more mentality points with which to use your PSI abilities. However, those of you who wish to have the roundtime reduction capability of the Humanities ability FOCUS SELF, should not train in the Paranormal Arts, as your ESP training will interfere with your ability to use the FOCUS SELF ability and many of the other Humanities abilities such as ATTUNED EYESIGHT and PHOENIX FIRE.


Acrobatics Flip, flip back, cartwheel, somersault, split, handstand. Use STANCE ROLL in combat.
Archaeology Read exhibit descriptions in the Royal Museum.
Archery Use bows and/or crossbows in combat. STANCE PRACTICE with archery weapon in hand.
Artistic Ability Sketch, paint, sculpt, dye clothing, dye hair.
Blunt Weapons Use blunt weapons in combat. STANCE PRACTICE with blunt weapon in hand.
Climbing Climb the jungle gym in Colonial Park, the jacaranda tree downtown.
Crafts Make balloon shapes, repair lockpicks, stitch crafts, dye, make candles.
Criminology Accuse perps, put perp weapons in the evidence collection box at the Police Dept.
Culinary Arts Make lemonade at the lemonade stand, bake cookies
Dancing Dance w/ partner (DANCE <name> jitterbug, lambada, tango, waltz, mambo, hustle) or by yourself (jig, breakdance, hula, tapdance <when wearing tap-shoes ).
Earth Science Pan for gold, look at plants in the greenhouse, recycle, search for gems.
Economics Appraise items.
ESP Ability Sense room, sense objects, and sense people. Use PSI abilities.
Evasion STANCE EVASION in combat and practice.
Explosives Throw cylindrical generators.
Fencing Use fencing weapons (i.e. swords) in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with fencing weapon in hand.
Firearms Use firearms in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with firearm in hand.
First Aid Tend wounds, DIAGNOSE GROUP while in group.
Fishing CAST fishing ROD.
Fitness USE the bikes in the Mercado gym.
Forensics Get samples.
Grappling Use grappling moves in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with no weapon in hand.
Humanities Meditate, FOCUS SELF and all FOCUS abilities, except FOCUS <weapon>.
Kicking Use kicking moves in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with no weapon in hand.
Knife Fighting Use knives in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with knife in hand.
Laboratory Science Sample the calamari at Blue Bay Fish N' Chips with a pharmacology kit.
Musical Instruments Play a musical instrument.
Nautical Ride back on the fishing charters.
Occult Studies FOCUS <weapon>, fight paranormal perps.
Paired Weapons Use two weapons in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with weapon in both hands.
Pilfering PALM items in your hand, or STEAL from NPCs.
Prowling Hide, sneak from room to room while hidden. (Wizard FE has auto-sneak option.)
Punching Use punching maneuvers in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with no weapon in hand.
Research Read books in University Library or articles in the Informer morgue.
Scuba Diving Un-learnable except by listening to a class.
Security Appraise boxes (up to 75), pick locks on boxes, push buttons on safe at pawn shop.
Singing Hum, sing.
Sports Shoot basketballs, hit volleyballs, use skateboards, jump rope, or play golf.
Stancing STANCE PRACTICE
Swimming SWIM in the pools in the Mercado gym, Hideaway Hotel, or TIC. Also swim in streams, rivers, etc.
Teaching TEACH a skill to someone.
Throwing THROW you opponent in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with no weapon in hand.
Thrown Weapons THROW weapons in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with throwing weapon in hand.
Two-Handed Weapons Use two-handed weapons in combat, STANCE PRACTICE with a two-handed weapon in hands.
Urban Tracking Appraise perps, search for shells on beach, analyze perps.
Zoology Look at the animals at the Royal Moradian Zoo, cross the Western Beach stream with the crocodile, look at the exhibits in the Cape Aquarium and take part in the interactive activities such as the Sea Turtle Maze and Touching Pool, and FORAGE for BUGS.
